Whittling down this year’s 6. But you can’t win ’em all. Kevin bridges preforming at the Edinburgh Comedy Festival in 2013. And, if it is a little longer than I was originally hoping it might be, this also goes some way to reflect the infinite variety to be found at this year’s Fringe, along with a satisfying number of acts building on past newcomer successes. In his unticketed gigs in the basement of a small pub just south of the Meadows, exquisitely morose wordsmith Liam Williams (nominated last year for best newcomer) has been drawing terribly clever links between capitalism and happiness, bifurcating – . It’s a marvellous, edgy and very funny show that also reads like the twentysomething generation’s rallying cry for real experience in an existence increasingly dominated by digital technology. You do worry for him, though. Also nominated in 2. Death of a Sails- Man – think Robert Redford’s shipwreck drama All Is Lost after a pint of LSD, and you get some idea. It divides audiences, but I think it’s his most satisfyingly structured set yet, even if Simmons does seem to think he’s a horse. Timetable clashes have so far prevented my seeing him, but I have heard a great deal of praise for his largely family- themed show, while his reported declaration that old people should be allowed to be a bit racist is nothing if not intriguing. In a year that has seen a record number of female comedians on the Fringe (the partial consequence, you suspect, of Bridget Christie’s ground- breaking, feminist- themed show winning last year), Sara Pascoe vs History is looking like the single most original woman’s- perspective show, and it is a truly sparkling and revelatory set, full stop. I’ve seen it twice, and it impressed me both times. There’s also a one- man, massively talented sketch machine from Australia (Steen Raskopoulos), an immensely promising, home- grown sketch trio (Gein’s Family Giftshop), and a fascinating girl- from- the- North creation (the vaguely Caroline Aherne- ish Lucy Beaumont), who not only sweetly hoicked me on stage, plonked a top hat on my head and photographed me marrying her best friend, but also made a bid for my phone number as I left the stage. And, with barely a third of the total number of nominees performing entirely as themselves, fans of “straight” stand- up may feel slightly under- served. Taken together, these two lists reveal a comedy scene quirkier and more unpredictable than ever – as unafraid of boggle- eyed foolishness as it is of sophisticated wordsmithery and genuine erudition – and also suggests an ever- broadening spectrum of talented comedians being drawn to the Edinburgh Fringe. I simply can’t wait to see who wins, but in the meantime I’m off for a stiff drink. READ: The 2. 7 best jokes from the Edinburgh Fringe. Edinburgh Comedy Awards 2. This article is from 2.
